***UPDATE*** Movement – Detroit Electronic Music Festival 2011 just ended and for Techno lovers this was the premier festival in North America to attend. We were there and will post some exclusive interviews and behind the scene footage of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival!!!

Over it’s 10 year history DEMF has gone through several different festival managers and promoters. Most recently (since 2006) Paxahau, a Michigan based record label and event organizer, has taken over and currently produces the festival. Detroit Techno pioneers, Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson were among some of the people involved in throwing the festival before Paxahau came to the helm. Since 2000, the city of Detroit has sanctioned and supported the event and while this may be due to the fact that DEMF brings in millions of dollars to the local economy, it’s nice to have full city support when throwing such large events.

Detroit is the true birthplace of Techno music so it’s only fitting that DEMF has a Techno heavy line-up - both during the festival and the after parties. If you like other genres of EDM, there will be some other talent but be prepared for 3 days of all-things Techno, as that’s what makes DEMF so unique. The festival itself is held at the Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit and the various after parties are also held at different locations downtown. Having everything in such a concentrated area makes it easy to get to any of your destinations.

We at FestivalZoo have put together some fun facts on Detroit, including where to stay and even suggestions on which dj’s you shouldn’t miss. You can read this information HERE.

For those who are experiencing Movement – Detroit Electronic Music Festival for the first time you should definitely bring comfortable clothes as this festival is more about the music than the glitz and glamour of let’s say…Miami (WMC/Ultra). The vibe in Detroit during the festival is amazing and, I must say, much different than you would normally experience in the city. You will no doubt be venturing out at all hours of the night and even though the city of Detroit seems to be in much better spirits during DEMF, please be sure to take care and follow general safety tips when traveling on vacation in any major city.

If DEMF is on your to-do list this year, take some time to explore the festival line-ups and prepare for the after parties so you can make sure to catch your favorite artists. We definitely recommend the Get Physical/Leftroom/Culprit Party. The line up is absolutely incredible and it takes place Sunday night at the City Club in the Leland Hotel. Be sure to leave any comments below as to what parties and artists you’re excited to see during this year’s DEMF!
