Audiotistic 2011: Why you should go, and why we can’t wait

Share

If you’re still undecided about Audiotistic 2011, you only have a week and a half left to make up your mind. Here are our picks for top artists to see, and perhaps our excitement for this event will persuade you to get out of the house next Saturday.

If you set one resolution for yourself this year, don’t make it 720p, don’t compromise with 1080p, go all out with Doctor P! Flux Pavillion and Doctor P. If these names aren’t ringing a bell, where have you been for the last year (and read on!)? These guys redefined dubstep last year, and have continued to do nothing but create massive track after massive track. When asked “what was the song that got you into dubstep?” a lot of people will response “Flux Pavillion‘s remix of Cracks.” Watch a video of someone dropping his huge (although now widely overplayed) “Bass Cannon,” and it will look like everyone in the crowd is dying of intensity; it’ll sound like a mass murder with all the screaming. Now how about Doctor P? His track “Sweet Shop” has been named the BEST DUBSTEP TRACK OF ALL TIME. His remix of Fenech-Soler’s beautiful “Lies” is a harmonic, bass-fueled dream. The Doctor P remix of Blame’s Star is another heavy hitting vocal smasher. I could go on about all of their songs… Still not convinced? The two recently did a collaborative remix to DJ Fresh’s Louder, the original which hit #1 on the UK top 40. The remix is being cained by all the top DJs worldwide and caused me to wet myself the first time I heard it. That’s right… I literally lost control of my body.

This is their first tour in the United States and they are certainly not a duo to be missed. Southern California, this is your chance, don’t miss it! If you’re worried about about hearing repetitive static, don’t be. These guys know what they’re doing and are coming to SoCal to please.

The other two we’re looking forward to in the Bass Frequency are Benga and DJ Fresh. Benga, one third of Magnetic Man, takes a lighter approach to dubstep then the heavyweight kings mentioned above. He’ll likely bring a more relaxing dubstep experience, if that’s what you’re looking for. DJ Fresh makes an exciting “special guest” appearance and will be rolling in the liquid drum and bass. His label, the “all-conquering, record-breaking, world-famous Breakbeat Kaos,” has been pioneering future jungle for almost 10 years. DJ Fresh will showcase the more melodic, a mid-level intensity side of DnB. If you’ve heard of Chase & Status or High Contrast, you’ll love DJ Fresh. Before Pendulum made tracks with hundreds of house remixes, they were banging out killer drum and bass with DJ Fresh on Breakbeat Kaos. We’re not sure what “Special Guest” means, but we know we won’t miss an opportunity to hear him perform.

Bass music doesn’t have to be your style to have a great time at Audiotistic. On the house stage, we’re dying to see Sebastian Ingrosso, a live performance by Crystal Castles, Diplo (whom I have a secret desire for him to drop some Moombahton, but don’t tell the other editors), Porter Robinson, and Bingo Players. What’s wonderful about the Treble Frequency stage is the difference in styles. Sebastian Ingrosso, who belongs to a little know Swedish trio known as the Swedish House Mafia, brings the festival and big room progressive house sound (you can bet he’s going to “save the world” tonight!). We’re not sure what the housier half of Major Lazer is going to play, but it’ll likely be a fun mix of moombahton, dubstep, and big room house. Porter Robinson has gained the title of being the electro house wonderkid. His impressive resume includes performing alongside the likes of Deadmau5, Tiesto, David Guetta, and many more, all at the ripe age of 19 (this kid just graduated high school and he’s already had a single land at #1 on beatport). Lastly, Bingo Players have a great, fun, clubby house sound. They’ll certainly have people singing along.

But wait! There’s more! Act now and I’ll tell you about the stage for people who aren’t eternally deveoted to electronic dance music! The Boombox stage features a mix of hip-hop, electro pop, dancehall, rock and more. You’ve certainly heard of the dancefloor duo Major Lazer (Diplo & Switch), their hit Pon De Floor has been mashed with every genre under the sun. I’m also a big fan of Chiddy bang. Their alternative rock samples and entertaining rhymes create a very welcoming hip hop experience.

Wow this article definitely highlights everyone I wanted to see at Audio this weekend (Too bad about ingrosso though). I do hope they replace him but I can’t wait to see Flux and Doctor P (missed them at EDC). It’s funny that you mentioned mostly electro artists though. Last Year’s Audio had Kid Cudi, this year they feature LiL B. You think there is anyone at The Boombox worth seeing other than Major Lazer and Chiddy Bang? Great article though Ill def try and check out DJ Fresh too, I always liked a little hardstyle, for about 2 min at max though. Hopefully he can give me a new perspective about it.
