Top 4 Signs That 2012 Will Be A Huge Year For EDM

Share

Although electronic music is considered relatively mainstream in other countries, it is still a ways from reaching that status here in the the U.S. Last year, however, we saw the popularity of dance music festivals and the EDM scene in general reach new heights here in the States and it only makes sense that 2012 is going to be bigger and better.

Here are 4 signs that indicate 2012 will be a huge year for EDM (especially here in the States).

(4) - DJs appearing in mainstream commercials

Using electronic music in commercials is certainly not a new concept. On the other hand, putting the DJs themselves in the commercials is! DJs in the EDM scene are becoming more recognizable and their popularity is undeniable - perfect combination for advertising. I’m sure there are others out there but the two commercials that come to mind are:

1. Diplo in ad for Blackberry Bold

2. Avicii in Bud Light commercial that aired during the Super Bowl

3. The Martinez Brothers in ad for Blackberry Bold

(3) - More coverage by MTV

Over the past few years MTV has had a growing interest in the EDM scene. I think we were all caught off guard when we saw or heard that Deadmau5 was on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. And he didn’t just make a brief appearance, he was a permanent fixture on stage throughout the entire 3 hour show. Since then the music channel has been slowly covering more of this kind of music on their website. At the end of last year they released this article:
“EDM Rookies to Watch in 2012″
I’m not saying EDM has “made it” because MTV sometimes covers electronic music now, rather a new audience and more people in general will be exposed to EDM now that MTV is paying attention.

(2) - Coachella scheduled for two weekends in 2012

When the biggest music festival in the country DOUBLES it’s dates, you know something big is on the horizon. For the first time ever, Coachella will run over the course of two weekends in April 2012 and, with each passing year, the line-up includes more and more electronic artists. Read more HERE.

(1) Grammy nominations for Skrillex

Whether you like his music or not, no one can deny the impact that Skrillex has had on the EDM scene, especially here in the States. In 2011 Skrillex became a household name (or pretty close anyway) and brought EDM a little bit closer to the forefront. The Grammys are this weekend (Februrary 12th) and Skrillex is nominated for five, yes FIVE awards.

His nominations are for:

Best New Artist, Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Best Remixed Recording and Best Short Form Music Video for “First of The Year.”

These are just a few reasons why this year is going to be a huge year for EDM. I know I’m not the only one excited to see what 2012 has in store!
