fZOO Exclusive Interview with Moguai

Share

German-born DJ and producer, Moguai, is one of the most diverse producers EDM has ever seen. With an eclectic style that incorporates all elements of dance music, Moguai’s music is sure to strike a chord with anyone. Signed to Deadmau5′s record label, Mau5trap records, Moguai was the first DJ/Producer other than Deadmau5 himself to release a full-length album on the label. Now, with artists like Skrillex and Feed Me joining the label, Moguai rests comfortably amongst the brightest and most dynamic artists leading the way for the rise of EDM. Fresh of the release of his second full-length album, “Mpire,” on Mau5trap records, Moguai looks to make 2012 an even better year than his chart-topping 2011. We had the opportunity to meet up with Moguai at Beyond Wonderland and talk about his career and the recent success of his latest album.

festivalZOO: At a festival event like Beyond Wonderland, can we expect anything different in your set from a set you would play in a club?

Moguai: Ya, I always try and bring it more on the point. Especially here today, I had just a sixty minute slot. So it’s different when I play tracks in the club. In the club I would play tracks longer. Right now I build from every track what I played and edit, made a special edit with vocals and so on, so it was more full-on. And it started more full-on, not like I would start in the club when you have two hours, three hours, maybe longer. It’s more on the point.

festivalZOO: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Moguai: The only thing that I’m trying to do when I’m on tour is have a short nap before my shows. Today it wasn’t neccessary becuase I had an early slot. But ya, that’s what I’m always trying to do.

festivalZOO: What’s your favorite song to spin right now that you feel needs to be incorporated in you live set? Or is it always changing?

Moguai: Favorite track right now comes from Congorock, it’s called, “Serious.” I got it from a good friend of mine, Christopher Lee from Orange County. I hadn’t heard it before, and since I heard it, it’s one of my favorite tracks right now in my set. It works very well.

festivalZOO: Your new album “Mpire” is very diverse in style. Can you tell me what inspired the album and what’s your favorite song on it?

Moguai: Favorite song on the album for me is “Lyme,” and it will also come out as the second single in two weeks. Inspiration came from trying to do an album that you can easily listen to at home, but you could also play on the stage like we have today at Beyond Wonderland. So it’s more than just a listening album, it’s a little more full-on. Not all the tracks, but some of them.

festivalZOO: What’s it been like having Deadmau5 as a confidant, especially knowing that you were the first artist to release a full length on Mau5trap Records, and then a second album?

Moguai: It’s great to be there on this label. I’m very happy that he signed me. It’s a good surrounding with Deadmau5, Skrillex, and Feed Me, and it suits very well to what I’m doing and it’s supported my style in a good way.

festivalZOO: Can you tell those that may not know about your monthly podcasts where we can listen and what we can expect from it?

Moguai: I’m doing a monthly podcast which is called Punx Up the Volume. It’s 100% what I’m playing live on the stage or in clubs. I’m also doing a weekly radio show that also plays my music and what I’m playing in the club or festival, but it also contains tracks which are more made for the radio. It’s an official radio station, every Saturday, 60-minutes. I do the first 60-minutes then the next 60-minutes is to a guest. In January and February we had many great artists from all over like Avicii, Kevin Harris, Digitalism and some more. We work very close together with the BBC in the UK. It’s also the biggest radio station we have right now in Germany. An average amount of people can listen to it, about 3.5. million, but you can also listen to it online.

festivalZOO: What do you like to do when your not DJing and writing?

Moguai: Spending time with my wife, with friends and family, and doing sports like fitness.

festivalZOO: Any future shows or events your looking forward too?

Moguai: WMC. Looking forward to Miami. It’s the tightest Miami schedule I’ve ever had, playing seven shows. Normally I play two or three in Miami. Very nice gigs and I’m looking forward to it.

festivalZOO: Ok, last question and this is something we ask everyone that we interview…If you could pick an animal that best describes your party style, what type of party animal would you be?

Moguai: A lion!
